With EdgeWorkers, you can quickly create functions-as-a-service and deploy them across the entire, globally distributed, Akamai Intelligent Edge Platform, ensuring robust scalability and performance while also accelerating development and deployment times.
What is Edge Computing? Edge computing is the practice of moving compute closer to where data enters the network, closer to where it is needed. For websites and applications that serve end users, this is moving compute functions closer to the point of customer interaction. So what are some of the advantages of doing this?
Performance Impact - Reduced Latency
For one, there is the benefit of performance impact by reducing latency. Using the serverless functions from origin to generate content, introduces latency and prevents cached responses. But if you move that serverless function to the Edge you can eliminate the round trips to an origin for that function, instead the function now operates as a service at the Edge, in close proximity to where it is needed. There it will perform better and scale effortlessly as traffic increases also.
Developer Control and Agility
Development teams are looking for ways to work smarter, not harder, and gaining efficiency is a huge advantage. As development practices have evolved to include DevOps workflows and federated teams this becomes even more critical. Moving serverless functions to the Edge aligns with DEvops workflows and gives additional control to the developers of the end experience. They are able to leverage skills the development teams already have, rather than learning a new platform specific coding language while giving them the flexibility and benefit to build functions that will customize web traffic, or augment the experience for their users with the power and proximity of an Intelligent Edge Platform.
Starting this month in October some of the key use cases for EdgeWorkers include the ability to modify request response workflows for things like URL redirects, traffic filtering, customized responses, and debug logging. There is also a robust roadmap to further expand this capability to become even more powerful enabling more advanced use cases next year including A/B testing, load and failover, API orchestration, personalization and dynamic content assembly.
