For over two decades I've made it my mission to stop "bad guys" on the Internet. Working day in and day out alongside an amazing team of security professionals inside our global Security Operations Command Center (SOCC) has given me the opportunity to do just that.
I'm excited to share with you our new video series, Stories from Inside the Security Operations Command Center. The series takes you inside the SOCC and reveals the stories behind the stories of some of the largest and most sophisticated attacks the Internet has ever witnessed.
As the Senior Director of Global Security Operations at Akamai, I've seen a lot over the years. Last year, for example, we knocked down the largest recorded DDoS attack in the history of the Internet with zero downtime to our customer. Let me reiterate that point: An attack large enough to take many countries offline resulted in zero downtime.
Our job is to keep you online.
The point is, Internet security is critical to the largest organizations, banks, corporations, and governments around the globe. But it's also critical to the small or mid-sized start up. My job is to work with the team that protects you from threats that come at your business through the Internet. The bad actors can be nation states or an irate employee. There's no magic button that will eliminate all threats. But we'll be there with you when they happen.
Part of what makes the Akamai platform so unique is its sheer size and reach. We have well over a quarter of a million end points distributed around the globe, and approximately 35% of all Internet traffic passes through our platform. That's a staggering number, and it's a huge advantage for us from a security and content delivery perspective, because we see real world data.
It's the combination of people and technology.
Our Security Operations Command Center employs some of the most skilled security experts in the world. One of the main reasons they're so skilled is that they are highly practiced. They fight dozens of attacks every single day, and they're constantly learning.
What's more, they're simply fantastic people. Yes, they're highly skilled, but they really care about our customers and they take great pride in what they do. They take our customers' trust and their reputation very seriously.
We know digital security is a high stakes business. Whatever product or service you're delivering, you need to be available. That's what we're here for. We protect you and make sure that you stay online, even while under a severe attack.
In that work, it's very important to us that we have a close personal relationship with our customers because of the confidence that it breeds. We focus on partnering with your security team. We deal with the malicious actors on the internet, allowing your team to better focus on their internal infrastructure. It's a huge difference maker when you know that we understand your unique needs. It helps us help you.
Threats aren't going away. Neither are we.
The attack surface is ever expanding. That trend is not going to stop. In fact, it's estimated that by 2020 there will be almost 31 billion connected devices in the world, and unfortunately, the attackers out there are very intelligent and extremely motivated to do harm and reap financial gain through their actions.
But every day when I wake up, I'm highly motivated to come into work and see what the next threat is. Our team brings an abundance of energy to the Akamai SOCC. It's infectious, and it's energizing. It makes you glad to be on the side of the "good guys."
I'm happy to be sharing this brief look inside our SOCC to kick off our new video series, Stories from Inside the Security Operations Command Center.
Every other week we'll be sharing a new video that will take a close look at some of the more notable attacks in recent history, including Operation Ababil, WireX, and more - and hear first-hand accounts directly from the Akamai engineers that faced these threats head on. I hope you'll see what I see when I witness my team at work: We are never satisfied with the average. And we are always pushing to do the absolute best. I hope you enjoy the show.
