Media Acceleration Enhances Online Experiences for OTT Video, Games and Software Downloads

Online audiences are growing and so are their expectations for the quality of experience. You know exactly what I mean if you've ever been frustrated with the rate at which a game is downloading or if your video stalls at the most inopportune time.

Online streaming is no longer novel, it's the norm. The days of being enamored by streaming your favorite TV show online are over. Viewers now expect instant access to uninterrupted video streams on whichever device they're using, anywhere they might be, at any time of day or night. The same goes for online gaming, where mobile downloads and updates are expected to complete in just a matter of seconds and large software files are expected to download faster than ever.

After years of experience delivering media over the internet, Akamai has identified an area where quality can still break down between the Akamai Edge and the end user. As online audiences continue to grow, congestion on the internet is likely to increase, which causes quality to suffer. Akamai has tackled this challenge using a "user centric" approach, focused specifically around the needs of the end user to prioritize quality over all else for each individual.

Today, Akamai announced Media Acceleration,  which is designed to improve viewing experiences for over-the-top (OTT) video and accelerate video game and other software downloads.  The capability marks a significant milestone in the evolution of Akamai's content delivery capabilities, aiming to provide the best possible experience for each individual. Media Acceleration is being released as a feature of Akamai's Adaptive Media Delivery and Download Delivery products. The capabilities can be enabled by integrating the Akamai Media Acceleration SDK directly into consumer applications to enable a consistent, reliable delivery experience for each end user regardless of their circumstances or local network conditions.

If you are planning to be in Las Vegas for the 2017 NAB Show in Las Vegas, April 24th-27th Akamai plans to demonstrate its Media Acceleration capabilities at booth SL3324. Please set up a meeting or stop by to learn more.
