Family Reach Gets Out of the Kitchen with Akamai

In my work with Family Reach, an organization that helps families battling cancer with out-of-pocket medical expenses and everyday living costs, I learned of a striking statistic: The number one cause of financial bankruptcy for families is paying for the costs associated with cancer.

This statistic is one that Family Reach helps to combat every day, and one of the key drivers of its upcoming Cooking Live event. Created by chef Ming Tsai four years ago, Cooking Live brings together some of the nation's top celebrity chefs to raise awareness of the impact of cancer on families and to cook for some of the families involved with Family Reach.

Cooking Live takes place on Monday, November 2, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. ET. Renowned chefs Masaharu Morimoto, Bryce Shuman, Ken Oringer and Johnny Iuzinni will join host Ming Tsai and celebrity sous chefs Emily Blunt and John Krasinski as they prepare a five-course meal while addressing the serious needs Family Reach addresses on a daily basis.

Typically, around 160 guests attend the Cooking Live event each year. When Akamai was made aware of the event and the great things that Family Reach does, we really wanted to find a way to help; and what better way than by helping to increase awareness of the organization's work and reach of the event through live streaming.

Working with our partners at Brightcove to deliver the program live, we'll expand the viewership from hundreds of in-person attendees to potentially millions via the Internet. This increased exposure will help to raise awareness of the serious issues faced by families fighting cancer, and hopefully spur even more community participation to assist these deserving families.

Akamai is proud to provide our Media Services Live in support of Cooking Live. This offering supports rapid deployment and high quality for live events at scale. The event will also be stored for on-demand viewing on Akamai's cloud-based NetStorage platform. Through Akamai Media Analytics, the Family Reach team will be able to monitor the user experience in real-time and make any adjustments needed.

The Akamai solutions are working in conjunction with Brightcove's live video workflow, including its content management system (CMS) and media player for Cooking Live. Collaborating with Brightcove allows us to provide a highly integrated, superior end-to-end media delivery solution for Family Reach.

I think Ming Tsai put it best: "The power of live streaming is helping us expand the scale of Cooking Live and awareness for Family Reach in a way that otherwise wouldn't be possible. Akamai and Brightcove are able to support the high quality video and audio that is so crucial in delivering the unique sights and sounds of the kitchen to create a truly immersive experience to viewers on any device."

We're looking forward to the event on Monday and hope you'll tune in as well. Simply visit the Cooking Live site or download the Family Reach Give app for iOS to stream or make a donation.
