One billion Red Envelopes Delivered!

I was born in Beijing and when I was a kid, I always looked forward to the Spring festival, because I'd receive red envelopes from parents as a celebration of the new year. In the envelope, there would be a significant amount of pocket money - not much for adults, but a fortune for a small kid
Decades passed and China has undergone massive changes in terms of economy, infrastructure and even customs. Fortunately, the tradition of giving a red envelope is something we've preserved. And now, it has become even more popular in its digital version, thanks to the power and magic of the Internet.

On the eve of the year of the Goat, two of China's Internet giants turned the holiday tradition into a wildly popular phenomenon that helped them tap into the digital wallets of millions of Chinese. Users - both individuals and businesses - could send electronic red envelope links in mobile chat apps. Those who clicked on the link received a small amount of cash or cash coupon that could be applied against services like online shopping or paying for taxis.

This year, the well-known Red Envelope application was delivered through Akamai and a whopping 1 billion red envelope transactions were delivered within four hours, constituting a delivery of over 687TB of traffic on the Akamai Intelligent platform. Leveraging this cloud platform around the globe and the Akamai professional service team, we ensured optimal user experience on any device, anywhere, even when millions of people were using the Red Envelope application at the same time.

I never imagined it - but red envelopes are now digital and we at Akamai are happy being part of supporting this Chinese tradition in the digital age. We're proud to say that Akamai not only delivers web traffic, but also red envelopes and the happiness they bring!

Note:
The Lunar New Year holiday, also known as Spring festival, is the biggest holiday in China. It is also celebrated in countries and territories with significant Chinese populations, including Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritius, and the Philippines. It is a wonderful time for family reunions and get-togethers.
