It feels like it's been an eternity, but just 79 days ago, Akamai announced the acquisition of Prolexic. Now that the acquisition has officially closed, we can finally start talking more about what it all means.
Akamai is a Web company. We built our name on improving the Web experience, largely by accelerating performance. But security plays an equally important role in that experience. After all, if your site suffers an outage due to a DDoS attack, then your users can't find what they're looking for, and they might go somewhere else. Or, if an attacker steals your users' personal information through an SQL injection or other exploit, then they're going to lose their trust in your ability to ensure their safety online.
That's why we built Kona Site Defender and Kona Web Application Firewall, to help you protect the same Web experience that you work so hard to improve with our performance solutions. As Website protection services, they keep your Web experience running through the largest DDoS attacks and protect them from the risk of data breach, with no downtime and no impact to performance.
Prolexic actually slots right into this framework quite nicely, giving our customers more choices in how they can protect their Web experiences. DDoS attacks have become much more frequent occurrences over the last few years. But for a variety of reasons, people often don't have the time to think about a solution until the problem is staring them in the face. For them, Prolexic Proxy provides a solution that can be rapidly deployed, on demand, to get their Web experience back online.
But that's only half of how Prolexic can add to the Web experience. We like to talk about the Web experience in the abstract, as something that encompasses all of the ways in which we interact with our users online. The reality is that it's often not as seamless as we would like to believe. For many of you, your Web experience comprises not one or two, but hundreds of Websites and applications. Prolexic Routed provides an easy way to protect your entire Web experience - all of the Websites and applications (and IP applications as well) in your data center - from the risk of a DDoS attack.
Now, if you think that this makes a lot of sense, it's probably because we didn't make it up. We only listened to what you told us you were doing. After all, a marketing person will never admit that his or her solution only solves half of the problem. But when we hear one of our financial services customers tell us about how they use Kona Site Defender for their home page and customer portal, Prolexic Routed for everything else, and absolutely has to have both - well, that's something worth paying attention to.
The most interesting acquisitions are always the ones that reinforce what you were already doing. Kona Site Defender and Kona Web Application Firewall have always provided deep protection against a variety of Web security threats that you face. Now, Prolexic Routed complements that with broad DDoS protection for the entire data center. So together, Kona + Prolexic help you protect all of your applications, so that all the work you put into creating more engaging Web experiences for your customers doesn't go to waste.
